Oak Tree
About The Oak Tree Archetype
The Oak Tree archetype represents a person who is grounded, strong, and extremely dependable. A loyal friend and lover even when the forceful winds of life try to blow them in other directions. Sometimes immovable in their opinions they can be stubborn, not out of ego, but from trying to offer protection. Like the mighty oak tree, they provide protection whenever needed. This is a person who will think of others before themselves and will willingly relinquish their stubborn stance if it can help someone else feel and do better.
A person with the Oak Tree archetype has the ability to bond completely with others offering lasting friendship and loyalty. They are not self-centered and instead think of what others may need that they can provide. They can forget to take care of themselves, however, a trait that is worth adjusting. If necessary, they will take on a battle that seems worth fighting and they usually do not back down. They make excellent parents, although watching that their overprotective nature does not hold their children back is important. They enjoy it when people depend on them, and gain satisfaction by doing an excellent job with everything they undertake. As children, they may have been physically awkward and sometimes shy, but as they have matured they find a natural comfort in their bodies and lose whatever shyness that may have once been with them. They are the lionesses and lions in our world. Warriors ready for battle, whenever necessary.
The largest part of the root system of an oak tree runs horizontally just below the surface for a significant distance. This root system is represented in the Oak Tree archetype as a desire to help many people. This archetype often focuses on the needs of many, while also taking care of the needs of their immediate family and friends. This archetype might be interested for example in saving the planet, the plight of the unhoused, issues surrounding the food supply, animal cruelty, income inequality, or racial relations. Very often this archetype is, or becomes, a community/group leader adding their passion and strength to their chosen cause. It is important for this archetype to be aware of their tendency toward stubbornness when working as a group leader. Flexibility can be challenging for them.
It is best if the Oak Tree archetype remembers to pay attention to caring for themselves. It is easy for them to become so focused on others, as well as what they are working on, that they will neglect their own needs. Special attention to eating a healthy diet, exercising, relaxing, and spending time in nature — something of high importance for this archetype since it is an earth element — are best to prioritize.

Guided Exercise
Growth Through Releasing
The Oak Tree archetype is strength personified but people who are this archetype are not indestructible. Their strength and highly dependable nature are to be admired, but this archetype does not easily rest or release. While resting is extremely important, it is the ability to release or let go that this exercise is about. Lightening the emotional and psychological load of this archetype provides a bounty of benefits including renewed energy and a relaxing of the inner self.
This exercise can be done as often as desired and at any time. In design, it is easy to do and requires only a few minutes of focus each time it is done. The Oak Tree archetype usually has a busy schedule. This exercise can fit into the busiest of days. It functions on symbolism and involves the process of discarding any item you choose. In the beginning, this works best using everyday objects, even something like a banana peel will work.
Find something to toss in the garage, recycling bin, or compost. It does not matter what it is, but the less attached you are to it the better. Hold the item in your hand and focus on how you feel. Say to yourself (silently or out loud), “It is safe for me to release this ____________.” Then toss out the item.
It is common for the Oak Tree archetype to have a reaction to doing this the first time, no matter how insignificant the item being thrown out is. Once you’ve tossed out the item congratulate yourself. This is a very important step and should not be omitted.
Notice your response to this exercise each time you do it. If you journal, incorporate your responses to this exercise there. You cannot do this exercise too often. In time you will be able to do it in a matter of seconds, but in the beginning, be sure to give yourself ample time to feel what happens to you.
As you toss out mundane items over the course of several weeks you are symbolically teaching yourself how to let go of whatever is hard for you to release. When you find yourself wanting to release something of an emotional nature that is burdening you, follow the same process in this exercise. You will want to devote more time to the new version and repeat the exercise several times until you feel the burden lighten.
