Waterfall
About The Waterfall Archetype
The Waterfall archetype represents a person who loves drama - a highly expressive and vocal extravert, often a performer and someone who does not shy away from the spotlight. They are opinionated but not harsh. They have a majestic quality to them and enjoy being seen and appreciated. These personality traits are natural to them, but there is a hidden side – the back side of the waterfall – that shelters their more mysterious and vulnerable side. It can seem that this person is only what they show the world, and for the most part that is true, but the more fortunate friend is the one who is allowed to discover their ‘back side of the waterfall’ to learn about their vulnerable and sensitive side.
A person with the Waterfall archetype has a natural expressive energy that is creative and fun to be around. They enjoy planning outings for friends and family and love throwing a party no matter the size. They celebrate life in big bites and are also extremely loyal to those closest to them. If they are crossed however they are slow to forgive and can hold a grudge. At the same time, if they choose, they can be forgiving of even the greatest disloyalties. They live big and love big, but it is only the person who can find the path to the ‘back side of the waterfall’ who will be able to truly connect with them. Life is an adventure to this archetype and even though they prefer to be doing something interesting, they can also be contemplative when they are in the mood.
The Waterfall archetype has an intensity that can sometimes create problems, especially if they become overly obsessive about something that can harm them. They enjoy sex and can easily overindulge in sexual experiences, and they can have a strong appetite for anything that can give them a surge of dopamine. The strong and expressive energy of this archetype is optimized when it is either creating or organizing. Anything that is healthy for this archetype can be experienced on a grand level, but they can also lose interest in something if the results feel too subtle to them. They are naturally attracted to people who are quieter and better listeners than they are.
This archetype’s more sensitive side is what truly makes them relatable, but most people are attracted to their larger-than-life personalities so this archetype can feel lonely even while they are the center of attention.
This archetype is a water element making water important to maintaining health. What is especially healing for them is water that is calm, like the water in a lake, although any interaction with water will be beneficial to them. Stillness and meditation can be especially healing for this archetype even though both can be challenging. But since this archetype appreciates a good challenge they can learn to become successful at meditating and also enjoy time being still.

Guided Exercise
A Path to Inner Solitude
An exercise that can help quiet the larger energies of the Waterfall archetype is discovering the path to their inner solitude. There is an internal location that is not physical but energetic. It is approached through progressive stages by repeating this exercise over the course of weeks or months.
This place of inner solitude we are looking for is not hidden and is always present and available to you. It is your mind that makes you believe it is other than available. Since it is not in some distant, secret internal space, we only need to remove what is keeping you from experiencing it. You do this by using your imagination and creating environments in your mind’s eye.
There are two versions of this exercise. The first, Version One, introduces you to its basic structure. The second, Version Two, is what you will use every other time you do this exercise after the first time. This exercise can be done at home or in nature. It is good to leave at least 20 minutes to move through the exercise’s five parts.
Version One
Sit quietly with your eyes closed. Take several deep breaths to begin relaxing. When you feel settled imagine yourself in an environment of your choosing. Somewhere you find pleasant. This can be a place you have been, seen images of, or are creating out of your imagination.
Once this first environment feels clear to you — you do not need to see every detail — sit with it for several minutes then let it dissolve. Create a second pleasing environment to replace the first one with the same criteria as before: a place you know, have seen images of, or you create with your imagination. Let this second environment come into view and spend time observing it. You do not need to interact with these environments. It is enough to witness them.
Do not rush, but when you are ready let this second environment dissolve and let a third environment come into view. This can either be a version of a pleasant environment like the first two, or any environment that presents itself. Spend time observing this new environment and when you are ready, let it dissolve and allow a fourth environment to present itself. This time, do not influence what or where this environment is. As before, once it is in view spend time observing it.
We will do this one last time. Allow the current environment to dissolve and be replaced by a fifth environment, not of your conscious choosing. Spend time observing this latest environment and when you are ready, let it gradually dissolve. Continue to sit and breathe naturally. Let several minutes pass. One of two things will become clear. You will have either reached your place of inner solitude or you have not quite reached it. How will know if you have reached it? You will know because you will remember it from a deeper intuitive part of yourself. It is more likely that it will take more repetitions of this exercise to reach this particular inner place, but if you have reached it you may return at any time by simply visualizing it.
Version Two
To repeat this exercise on other occasions, begin as this exercise first begins by creating the first environment yourself. Then, let the following four environments create themselves, one at a time, each one dissolving before the next one appears. Try to only observe these environments and not change them in any way as they develop. The environments that you are not consciously creating may look real to you or be completely fantastical. Just go with what evolves. It is important to experience five different environments each time you do this exercise even if your mind tells you to do fewer. The repetition of environments helps create distance from your conscious mind and move you into deeper parts of yourself.
Once the fifth environment dissolves spend time feeling and seeing what happens. You may have found your inner place of solitude, but if not — and for most people this takes several repetitions of the full exercise — repeat the second version of the exercise at another time and continue to repeat it until you arrive at your goal. Which, in time, you will. You will be getting closer each time. As a general guide, it is important not to rush any of these visualizations.
